and WellnessROLE: Director of Product Design and Research, AduroLOCATION: AmericasA tremendous opportunity to create a crucial health tool from scratch, from concept to delivery. This was hands down my favorite project of the last 5 years, due to the high level of generative ethnographic research we did and the user-centered design model we were able to adhere to. I was able to conduct hours of meaningful conversations with the research particpants, joining them in their homes to learn about their culture, diets, exercise, families, dreams, and challenges. Our research during the pandemic showed just how important mental health support was in a person’s journey to physical health and greatly informed the eventual design. Diabetes is a serious health burden for Americans, with 51% afflicted or being pre-diabetic. From a human perspective, diagnosis can be an emotionally upsetting lifestyle reboot for the sufferers, and for employers it is a mammoth financial burden due to lost productivity. 90 billion dollars is a staggering number to consider in lost revenue. Aduro’s management system is an effective one, combining real-time meetings and interactions with coaches, written and video learning content, a gamified rewards economy employers can self-populate and a robust data collection tool for individual mebers to track diabetes. In partnership with two of the largest healthcare systems in the nation, Providence Health (51 hospitals) and Bon Secours Mercy Health (48 hospitals), we at Aduro developed from scratch a condition management tool focused initially on diabetes (with hypertension and other conditions forthcoming). We produced the UX, UI, research and engineered the web and mobile platforms as well, a strong partnership between design, product management and engineering. The app was developed using Prime Vue, allowing us to use a core group of components across Android and iOS. Taking a look at our tool In comparison to other market leaders in the diabetes management space, we created an experience that was data rich without being overwhelming, had a sensible heirarchy allowing access to coaching and learning quickly, was friendly and formed a strong basis to link with other condition management features down the road.While leading our team of full-time and contract designers, I brought a novel user-centered cadence to the design disciplines at Aduro, moving us toward a design practice that designed through iteration and testing. We made great use of MIRO and other online collaboration tools, finding ways to harness all the creative energy from our remote team. During our pilot we tested early versions of our designs with a panel of users from Providence and Bon Seqours Mercy Health and also by using a variety of online services, in both moderated and unmoderated sessions. Beyond the new condition management tool, I also oversaw design and research work on the main legacy desktop tool for Aduro’s employee wellness platform, as well as creation of the new client insights dashboard. Other responsibilities as the director of product design and research included facilitating executive workshops, recruiting, hiring, formulating and implementing design process, networking and sales. ManagementROLE: Global Creative Director, HARMAN LOCATION: International Our two year engagement with Zonar /Mercedes-Benz Group / Continental began with a pitch to win their work away from another technology consultancy here in Seattle. We succeeded and had an embedded team of 25 engineers and UX designers overseeing the recreation of their Ground Traffic Control (GTC) system, a rich collection of hardware and software used by companies to manage large fleets of vehicles.As global creative director (UX), I recruited and hired the UX team, sold the project, established timeline and strategy, managed the workflow closely with engineering and PMs, led design crits and client meetings, established the researcher plans, worked individually with designers and researchers (sometime late into the night at cafes) and celebrated as we completed our work.... Following a user-centered design paradigm, we explored customer service records, set up research activities and even interviewed users at Zonar’s annual conference in San Antonio, where we gathered information from truckers, mechanics and managers. We tore down the information architecture of their existing system and recreated the hierarchy based on user needs and task flows, all the while testing live data speed in the cloud from vehicles in the field back to the control centers. Our embedded team of designers and technologists followed an Agile software development approach that was modifed to involve our remote developers as well.Zonar started off as a single engagement customer but our work was strong enough to eventually become their agency of record (AOR) and earn ownership of research responsibilities at their annual conference, creation of a variety of mobile International AgVerdict is a powerful software platform offered by Wilbur-Ellis that spans the entire practice of precision agriculture. Our team of 80 engineers and UX designers spent over a year researching users, prototyping, designing, building, testing and deploying this all-inclusive tool. Features supported included field mapping, scouting, plant nutrition management, soil sampling and soil analysis, food safety compliance, application management, site specific data, long term record data storage and comparisons, all housed within iOS apps for iPad and iPhone and a desktop portal.We pitched and won this project, an incredible opportunity to lead with UX design; it allowed us the rare opportunity to conduct ethnographic field research in farms and facilities across North America in 5 states. This unique space serves as the primary point of physical connection between Boeing and their customers during the final stages of aircraft purchase. Our team was engaged to design the digital installation for the main entrance as well as the individual screens for the executive suites and conference rooms. This included large scale LCD screens and mobile and Microsoft Surface tablet experiences. The screens had a significant amount of dynamic content pulled from real time systems, each heavily customizable to relate to Boeing's numerous international clients and their individual needs. We built scaled architectural models of the space to better understand the flow and placement of the screens within the environment, created the UI, programmed the screens and also created software on the accompanying Surface tablets to synch with flight and calendering information we were pulling. This was our first engagement with Boeing, a point of pride for the team to have won the work and created a rich and complex cross-platform experience for so many facility visitors. on the full-time faculty teaching in the Division of Design at the University of Washington where I focused primarily on teaching graduate students in the premier Masters in Human Computer Interaction and Design Program (MHCID). During this one year instensive masters program, I was the graduate student’s core instructor, leading them through a full cycle of design thinking curriculum that culminated in a commercially sponsored capstone project. I’ve also served on the admissions and executive committees for MHCID.We were fortunate to work with sponsors such as NASA, JPL, Microsoft, Amazon, HTC, Artefact, Frog, Electronic Arts, Two of Us and many others. Our talented graduates have gone on to take roles at some of these companies as well as Google, Apple, Facebook and others.The university classes I teach are primarily studio in nature and project based drawing on my years of commercial experience as a designer and practice director. Classes generally involve students following user-centered design processes and as often as possible will envelope all stages; research, ideation, prototyping and testing. At the university and off campus, I also offer lecture courses and independent study classes/sessions centered around cross-cultural visual communication, interdisciplinary ideation and civic engagement between technology groups and the community.Teaching is a tremendous privilege and responsibility, there are few things in life which are more satisfying than sharing the knowledge one has gained through years of work with newer practitioners eager to enter the design space. It falls on the teachers to model healthy HCI as a holistic discipline that empowers all aspects of a user’s product experience AND community and actively addresses considerations beyond the commercial. Commercial design and UX life can be overwhelming for newer practitioners, and I delight in helping make sense of the broad discipline and mapping to the unique skills and goals of an individual. In the right learning environment, a student can emerge not only equipped with top notch design and technology skills, but with a complimentry knowledge of psychology, cross-cultural anthropology, the arts, and humanities. My goal in teaching is to create an environment that produces these complex, interdisciplinary design thinkers. I continue to teach, lecture and facilitate workshops at the University of Washington and through private organizations. Tellous organized and sponsored a multidisciplinary group of students across UW’s arts, design, psychology, and engineering majors to look at the challenge of displacement within vulnerable populations as a result of Seattle’s housing shortage. I led the students on a 2 month exploration of participatory design and we conducted user research with both the neighborhood property owners and those experiencing homelessness across Seattle. Our processes and outcomes garnered interest and meetings with leadership at both the Seattle City Club and the Gates Foundation. After doing some ethnographic work with staff, I created wireframes and high fidelity Photoshop mockups for the new intranet system. The design was to align with the brand in eleganance while at the same time pointing toward the future and being economical and clean.Had a great time in Los Angeles and in the process of interviewing and shadowing the staff users of the system I toured some of the climate controlled rooms at the AMPAS library where they house beautiful old constructivist movie posters from Eastern Europe in the 1920's. The original script for the Wizard of Oz is also there with pencil notes on it. :O !!!
